Rumors of clown threats and sightings

Students in some of our schools are reporting that they have heard rumors about clown threats. We understand that this stems from an internet/social media rumor that started in August on the East Coast and has made its way into Clark County.

The rumors have caused fear among some of our students and families. Vancouver Public Schools administrators and educators are working with our neighboring school districts and local law enforcement to ensure the safety of our students and staff members. We have district security officers making rounds throughout the district as an added safety presence. At this time, schools are operating on normal schedules.

We also have policies and procedures to protect students and staff:

  • Clothing that disrupts the learning environment or threatens the health or safety of others is not allowed in our schools.
  • Bullying, harassment and intimidation also are prohibited under our policies.
  • Staff members monitor entrances to our schools. Many have electronic entry systems that require visitors to be buzzed in. All visitors also are asked to sign in at the office and wear a visitor’s badge while they are in schools.

If you come across posts about clown sightings or threats, or hear people saying the threats are meant for one or more of our schools or students in Vancouver, please do not be alarmed as they are most likely not credible. If we become aware of any specific threats for which there are supporting facts or evidence, we will alert you right away.

You can help by not sharing these rumors, providing the facts if you hear people talking about rumors, and easing fears of students who may be concerned about the threats.
